On Friday morning just before 7:00 a.m. Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue and Moore County EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle wreck. The wreck occurred on U.S. 1 in the south bound lane with the car going down an embankment. Due to the heavy impact of the wreck the dispatch center requested a second heavy rescue respond from Southern Pines. Upon the arrival of Engine 211 they reported a car down a steep embankment, overturned with an unknown number of occupants. CPFR descended the embankment and worked to gain access to the patient or patients. It was determined that their was only one occupant but he was unable to get out of the car. The car was stabilized so that it would not continue to move or shift and then hydraulic spreaders were used to fore one of the rear doors open. Having to work on the side of a hill on an upside down vehicle while working in vines and around trees was extremely difficult for the rescuers. As SPFD arrived part of their personnel descended the embankment to assist with removing the occupant from the car. Then both CPFR, SPFD as well as EMS personnel evaluated the occupant for injuries and placed the patient on a back-board and then in a stokes basket in order to move him up the embankment. While the patient was being cared for the remainder of SPFD and CPFR personnel rigged a rope hauling system to pull the patient to the top of the embankment in the stokes basket. Patient care was turned over to EMS who transported the patient to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating this wreck.
