Challenging Extrication Early Sunday Morning

By Department Chief Mike Cameron
September 10, 2023

At approximately 3:30 a.m. CPFR, Moore County EMS, and a Second Rescue from Southern Pines Fire/Rescue were dispatched to a wreck on U.S. 1 North Bound just passed Lakeview Community. A single vehicle had left the roadway and went down a steep embankment hitting several trees on the way down and coming to rest against a large tree.
The car was not visible from the roadway but fortunately, bystanders knew where the car was and allowed E-211 and Heavy Rescue 219 to locate the vehicle quickly.
The driver of the car was pinned-in and was unable to get out of the car on his own. Firefighters had an extremely tough time with this extrication due to having to work on a steep incline, large trees surrounding the car, and severe damage to the car.
Firefighters removed the roof, removed both the passenger side door and driver's side door then pushed the steering wheel and dash up and off of the driver.
The victim was removed to a Stokes Basket and a mechanical advantage was used to get the patient up the embankment where he was turned over to Moore County EMS for additional treatment and transport to the hospital. A medical helicopter was requested but was unable to fly due to the weather.
This incredibly challenging extrication took 1 hour and 13 minutes from the time the 911 Center received the 911 call and 1 hour and 6 minutes from the time CPFR personnel arrived on-scene to complete.
The Moore County Sheriff's Office also responded, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol is completing the investigation into this wreck.
