Passing of a Legacy - David Cummings

By Department Chief Mike Cameron
February 21, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Cummings longtime President of the Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue Board of Directors. After a battle with cancer, David passed away on February 21, 2024, surrounded by his family and many friends.

David spent his life serving the community in more ways than most can count. He started with the Vass Rescue Squad at 16 years old and was promoted to the rank of Captain, leading the rescue squad during a time of significate call volume increase by an all-volunteer agency before there was county-wide Advance Life Support. David was a strong supporter of the paramedic program that was introduced into Moore County in the early 90's and he often promoted pre-hospital advanced level care until it became a reality. David was also part of the 1971 World Rescue Championship Team which was won by members of the Vass Rescue Squad.

David continued to serve the citizens, support first responders and emergency services when he won a race for County Commissioner and eventually rose to become the Chairman of the Board of the Moore County Commissioners. He was well respected and extremely loyal to those that he served and worked along-side. He always used a commonsense approach to decision making and often "warned people not to out-think their commonsense".

In 2010 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Fire Department and appointed Chairman of the Board in 2016. He used the same logic and commonsense when providing guidance to the department. He was committed to providing the department with the tools that would help make the citizens safer and always supported the members of the department.

David's commitment and counsel will be missed but his influence will continue for years to come.
