Earlier today, just before 3:00 p.m., Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue (CPFR) was dispatched to a rapidly growing wildfire on Lizzie Jeter Road in Cameron. The fire had already spread to multiple vehicles and was threatening several homes.
The North Carolina Forest Service and the National Weather Service had previously issued a High Fire Danger warning for Saturday due to low humidity, strong winds, and high gusts. In response, fire departments across the Sandhills Region were operating under Readiness Plan 4, which ensures increased fire resources are dispatched immediately for outside fires in hazardous weather conditions.
The initial response included CPFR, Crains Creek Fire Department, Spout Springs Fire Department, and the North Carolina Forestry Service from Harnett County. Upon arrival, CPFR units encountered an aggressive wildfire consuming vehicles and rapidly advancing toward nearby structures. Firefighters prioritized structure protection while working to extinguish the burning vehicles and slow the wildfire’s spread.
However, due to strong winds, dry conditions, and the challenging terrain, the fire continued to grow and move quickly beyond the reach of the initial crews. A second alarm was requested, bringing additional personnel and apparatus from Carthage Fire Department, Lemon Springs Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire Department, Fort Bragg Fire Department, and Eastwood Fire Department. Harnett County EMS and the Sheriff's Office also responded to assist. Whispering Pines Fire Department responded to CPFR Station 1 to cover the district.
To combat the advancing fire, forestry plows from Fort Bragg and the North Carolina Forestry Service were deployed. As of 10:30 p.m. on March 1, 2025, the fire remains active and has burned approximately 30 acres. Many original responding units remain on scene, working tirelessly to contain the blaze.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, and no homes have been destroyed at this time. Fire crews continue to battle the fire through the night, prioritizing containment and protecting nearby structures. |
